The term Web 2.0 was established in 2004 and was defined as “the philosophy of mutually maximizing collective intelligence and added value for each participant by formalized and dynamic information sharing and creation”.
Web 2.0 does more than just provide results for requests for information.
- It now functions as a delivery, advertising and value chain.
- It provides instant access to information, products and services.
- It is accessible and usable by all through print, audio and video.
- It can be subscribed to and provide notification of changes.
Web 2.0 has been described as:
- “the wisdom of crowds”.
- “We, the media,” where the former audience and not a few people in a back room, decide what is important.
- the “live web”.
