The City of Santa Clara has recently updated its code to include the regulation of private tree removals. 

A permit is required if the tree(s) fit any of the following: 

​

1. Are Heritage Trees (Designated by City Officials)

2. Are one of the following species & are 12 inches or greater in diameter:

• California Buckeye

• Big Leaf Maple

• Deodar Cedar

• Blue Atlas Cedar

• Camphor Tree

• Western Sycamore

• Native Oak Trees (Coast Live, Valley, Black, Blue, Interior)

• Coast Redwoods

• Bay Laurel Trees & California Bay 

3. Approved Development Trees

4. All other trees with diameters greater than 38 inches

Trees located on “public right of way”, or between the side-walk and street are classified as “City Trees” and cannot be removed or pruned by property owners. To have these trees removed or serviced, homeowners must fill out a request online or call 408-615-3080.
